Chihuahua Information
-
Chihuahuas have large, round eyes and large, erect ears set in a high, dramatically rounded skull. A graceful, alert, swift-moving compact little dog with saucy expression. The Chihuahua’s coat can come in many colors and patterns, and may be long or short. These dogs have huge personalities. They have a terrier-like demeanor and are alert little dogs with a big-dog attitude.
-
Chihuahuas have thin hair and are not adapted to cold temperatures. Though small in size, they like plenty of exercise given their abundant levels of energy. However, their stature makes it possible for them to become targets of larger animals or birds of prey, so they need to be monitored while outside. Likewise, young children will need to handle these fragile dogs with care.
-
Named for the Mexican state of Chihuahua, this breed was registered by the American Kennel Club in 1904. Before this they were not commonly found in areas outside of Mexico. They were bred for various purposes, including companionship, rituals, and food. They are believed to be descendants of the ancient Techichi dog.
